They can back and finance their candidate, doing as much as the law allows to push their candidate into the presidency. Their power and influence can extend as far as choosing who the next president is. The influence of the corporation back in the early days of the Federation has persisted. Most lawmen and police officers typically accept these bribes. Most crimes can be turned a blind eye to with the right amount of money. With this distraction in place, the rights of the citizens of the Federation slowly and subtly ebb away.Ĭorruption is not uncommon within the Federation. Due to this, even wars fought on behalf of the Federation are given little coverage, unless it is inherently shocking or different from other wars (slave rebellions/liberation efforts, Thargoid). Mainstream media distracts the population from major issues within the galaxy with various things commercial advertising, top politicians, pop celebrities, etc. However, it also retains much of it's predecessors traits. The Federation sees itself as the peacekeepers and military superpower of the galaxy, much like it's ancient predecessor, the United States of America. These systems are widely regarded as the founding systems of the Federation. Other systems signed onto the Accord Altair, Beta Hydri, and others (can't remember others). Later on, when colonists on Tau Ceti were hunting the local wildlife into extinction (which had been going on for the past 20 years or so), Sol forced the colonists to cease their actions with the Federation Accord (I think this is what it was called). Sustainable, permanent colonies beyond the Moon and Mars became real possibilities. While they were rebuilding, the corporations took the lead in serious space efforts. Following the war, while many "nations" (really just large tribes of people populating the areas) were roaming their lands trying to survive, the United States unified these tribes into one entity, becoming the United States of Something (can't remember).
